The Collaborative Dance of Healing: Understanding Your Role in a Session

Introduction: Healing as a Partnership

In the healing community, it’s often said that practitioners are simply facilitators, holding space while the client does all the healing. This perspective is rooted in humility, reminding us as healers to honour the power and autonomy of the individual receiving the session. However, while this approach keeps us grounded, it doesn’t fully reflect the collaborative nature of the healing process.

Healing is not a one-sided journey; it’s a partnership. Both the practitioner and the client play significant roles in the unfolding of the session, supported by unseen energies, Source, and the modality being used. By understanding these roles, we can better appreciate the intricate balance and teamwork that make each healing session a unique and transformative experience.

The Collaborative Nature of Healing

Healing is a collaborative process. You could say it’s 50-50, but even that doesn’t fully capture the dynamic. There are so many other elements at play—the unseen energies, Source, Mother Earth, the modality being used, and the specific needs of the individual. All these aspects combine to create a bespoke balance, a unique percentage breakdown for each session.

For instance, the practitioner might hold 20% of the responsibility, the receiver 40%, and the unseen energies another 40%. Or the balance might look completely different depending on the session’s purpose, the modality, and the allies being called in.

The Spectrum of Involvement in Healing

There’s also a spectrum of involvement during a healing session. On one end, you might be deeply engaged, actively identifying, moving, and releasing blockages. The facilitator guides you, but you’re doing a significant amount of the work yourself.

On the other end, there are sessions where you’re simply lying down, fully receptive, allowing the energies and the facilitator to work on you. Even in this state, your openness and willingness to release are crucial. It’s not a passive process—you’re still participating by being present, but the role you play is much more receptive.

Choosing the Type of Healing You Need

For me, there are times when all I want to do is receive. I don’t want to actively engage; I just want to be nurtured, held, and supported in a beautiful, sacred space. In these moments, I need that cocoon of love and care, where I can let go and allow healing to flow through me.

"It’s important to understand what type of healing you’re seeking at any given time."

Are you ready to actively engage in your own process, taking the lead in identifying and moving through what’s coming up? Or are you craving a space where you can simply rest, receive, and let go, trusting the process to unfold with the support of a practitioner and the unseen?

If you’re seeking that soft landing—that deeply restorative, nurturing experience—I highly recommend exploring modalities like:

Pellowah: A gentle yet profoundly powerful modality. It works at your pace, transforming the layers you’re ready to address. Changes might feel rapid in some areas and more gradual in others, depending on what’s best for you.

Chakra Balancing: A beautiful way to restore flow within your body and energy systems, releasing blockages and creating alignment for balanced wellbeing.

Crystal Healing: Working with the intelligence of crystals, combined with your own energy and unseen forces, brings about a cumulative effect of healing, balance, and flow.

For more active modalities, such as Deep Emotional Release, Past Life Healing, and Soul Retrieval, you take on a more involved role. These sessions are guided but require you to take the front seat in identifying and working through the layers. They are profoundly transformative, but they demand a different level of participation.

Umana Technique©: Advanced Energy Work

Umana is an incredible modality that, while receptive in nature, operates on a profoundly advanced level of energy work. Its focus is on the evolution of consciousness, facilitating rapid and significant shifts that can lead to extraordinary growth. However, the pace and intensity of these changes can be a lot to manage, as they require a high level of capacity within you to integrate these transformations effectively. For this reason, Umana may not always be the right fit if you’re currently feeling overwhelmed or navigating tumultuous life circumstances. In such times, it’s often more beneficial to focus on balancing and restorative modalities, which can help you ground, align, and prepare your energy systems. Once you feel ready, stepping into Umana can be a powerful catalyst for evolution, offering profound shifts and expansive growth when the time is right.

Integration: The Real Work Begins After the Session

While the dynamics of a session may vary—whether it’s a more passive, nurturing technique or one that actively engages the recipient in a guided process of self-healing—the responsibility for healing ultimately lies with the individual. During a more passive session, the collaboration may feel more weighted towards the facilitator’s role in creating and holding the space. However, the real work begins after the session ends, as the shift in responsibility moves to one hundred percent on the recipient. Healing requires ongoing engagement with the energies received, as well as working with what has been released, regenerated, or adjusted. This continuation is essential for integration and lasting transformation.

"True healing happens when the individual is fully committed to embracing their process, taking responsibility for their journey, and nurturing the positive momentum sparked in the session."

The Practitioner’s Unique Influence

Having done a significant number of swaps and sessions with both colleagues and people I’ve never met before, I’ve experienced firsthand how much the facilitator influences the session. We are often taught that we are simply conduits for the energy, that it doesn’t matter who the practitioner is because the energy itself will always be the same. On one hand, this is true—the energy flows through us. On the other hand, it’s not entirely accurate.

Each practitioner brings their unique essence into the healing process. The way they facilitate the session, the energy they hold, and the elements they include or omit before, during, and after the session all contribute to the experience. Every session feels different because every person facilitating it is different. This is not to diminish the humility that comes with being a conduit—it is essential to remain humble. But it’s equally important to recognize that the essence of who you are is translated into the healing you provide.

Reconnecting with Your Essence

When you are holding space from a place of deep love, presence, and alignment, it profoundly enhances the experience for the receiver. Conversely, if you are distracted, indifferent, or navigating your own struggles, it can affect the session. I’ve personally had to step back from offering sessions recently because I’ve been going through so many challenging scenarios. The universe has nudged me to take this break, and I’ve listened. Knowing when to step back is critical because showing up for someone’s healing journey is a sacred responsibility. If you’re going to show up, you must do so in the most beautiful, centred, and loving way possible.

Staying consciously aligned with yourself, your essence, and the unseen can feel deeply challenging, especially during times of stress or when you’re weighed down by the demands of daily life. The transactional nature of so many exchanges—whether with people, situations, or responsibilities—can feel heavy and even disconnecting.

In those moments, it can feel like your connection to your soul, your spirit, and the universe has been dulled or lost. This disconnection is an awful feeling, like being adrift without a tether. And yet, it’s also in these moments that the work becomes most important.

Sometimes, reconnecting with that essence requires what feels like manual effort. You have to actively bring yourself back online—consciously choosing practices, modalities, or spaces that help you realign. This could mean stepping away from distractions, like social media or overstimulation, and returning to what nourishes you. It could mean reaching out to trusted healers or colleagues, engaging in deeply nurturing modalities, or simply creating space for stillness.

It’s not always effortless, but it’s always worth it. The more you invest in these practices, the more you cultivate the ability to find your centre, even in the midst of life’s challenges.

Transformative Experiences with Other Modalities

This process has been anything but easy. It has required time, effort, and dedication. I’ve been laying low, quiet, and focused, working on myself in a very conscious way. Some days, it feels like everything around me is pushing me to my limits, demanding an extraordinary level of self-mastery and resilience.

There was a period recently where I found myself spending far too much time on social media. This isn’t something I usually enjoy, but I couldn’t seem to pull myself away. It became a toxic diet of information that seeped into my energy, altering my thoughts, mood, and behaviour in ways I didn’t like.

Recognizing this, I made the deliberate choice to step back—to post less, engage less, and distance myself from the algorithm’s endless pull. This was a vital part of my journey to realign with what truly nourishes me. Because, let’s face it, life can get wild, stressful, and demanding, and it’s all too easy to fall off the track that helps us feel most balanced and healthy.

For me, this means reconnecting with my physical body—its health, its movement, and its nourishment. It’s about appreciating my body and feeding it with foods that restore and uplift. It’s also about recognizing that the diet isn’t just what we eat but what we consume in every sense—mentally, emotionally, spiritually.

Healing Through Learning and Teaching

In times of intensity, I’ve gravitated toward healing modalities that allow me to simply receive. When life feels overwhelming, I don’t always have the capacity to be actively involved in my own healing. I need that nurturing space where I can just let go, be held, and be supported.

"This is why I’ve been focusing on sessions that offer a soft landing."

The festive season brings with it a wide range of experiences. For some, it’s a time of joy, ease, and celebration. For others, it’s a season of heightened challenges and emotional weight. And for many of us, it’s a bit of both.

This year, I’ve found myself navigating a lot of challenges, dealing with difficult people and situations while also finding moments of light and joy. It’s been a mixed bag, and I’ve had to consciously focus on alchemizing the difficult moments into growth and transformation.

In the midst of all this, I’ve leaned heavily on the support of beautiful healers and colleagues. Modalities like Spinal Flow, which I highly recommend, have been incredibly nourishing. These sessions remind me of the importance of seeking support when we need it and honouring what our bodies and souls are asking for.

This season, more than ever, I encourage you to listen to yourself. What do you need right now? Do you need rest and nurturing? Or are you ready to actively engage in your healing and growth? Whatever it is, trust that there’s a modality, a practice, or a community that can support you.

The Ongoing Healing Journey

Some of the most transformative experiences I’ve had have come from modalities I don’t personally offer, such as bespoke one-to-one sound healing and prana healing techniques. These sessions were deeply personal, tailored entirely to my needs, and left a lasting impression on me—not just because of the incredible power of the modalities themselves but because of the energy and approach of the practitioners who facilitated them. I learned so much from their ability to create sacred spaces and hold such beautiful, nurturing energy during these sessions. The memory of their essence—how they held space, the love they embodied—remains intertwined with the healing I received.

These experiences have shown me that healing is not just about the technique or modality; it’s also about the presence and essence of the practitioner. Their care, their intention, and their ability to hold space with love and authenticity profoundly influence the experience. It’s a reminder that the healing world is vast and filled with so many incredible and nurturing modalities, each offering unique opportunities for transformation. Whether it’s Spinal Flow, bespoke sound healing, prana healing, or something else entirely, there’s a wealth of healing options waiting to support and uplift us.

Healing doesn’t always happen on a table, in a session, or through a specific modality—it can also take place in the act of learning. Sometimes, healing emerges from immersing yourself in something completely outside your realm of exposure or diving deeply into an area of passion and interest. For me, this has been transformational.

Right now, I’m embarking on my second workshop in the Peruvian MESA tradition, and in May next year, I’ll begin a three-month program in Andean Cosmovision. I feel deeply drawn to this way of thinking and living—a form of earth medicine and conscious evolution that feels so aligned with where I am right now. I incorporate these teachings into my practice because every workshop I attend is not just educational—it’s transformational. It’s healing.

This is a big part of why I’m so excited to begin teaching more next year. I’m exploring collaborative teaching with other incredible teachers, and we’re reimagining how modalities and spiritual information are taught. For me, it’s crucial to create access for a varied and neurodivergent audience, which means differentiated teaching styles and innovative approaches.

"It’s about offering learning in a way that hasn’t been done before, ensuring it resonates with as many people as possible."

But back to the point: studying itself is healing. It offers a gateway into new perspectives, new routines, and new ways of thinking. Taking the essence of what you learn—whether it’s spiritual practices, earth-based traditions, or even something seemingly unrelated—and incorporating it into your day, your routine, your spiritual hygiene, is deeply nurturing.

There are so many components to caring for ourselves, for rejuvenating and regenerating, for purging and releasing, for advancing in our journey. Learning, studying, and engaging with transformative ideas can be as powerful and healing as any other modality, and it’s one of the most beautiful and accessible ways to heal and grow.

In challenging times, it’s easy for our light to feel dim. But just as others have been beacons for me, helping me reconnect with my own light, I aim to be that for others. Healing is a journey, one that requires us to continually choose alignment, growth, and connection. And while it’s not always effortless, it’s always worth it.
